The king of Qin sent an envoy to inform the king of Zhao that he wanted to exchange fifty cities for the jade. The king of Zhao and General Lian Po discussed the matter and said, "The king of Qin is unjust and greedy, never satisfied. I have heard it said that he who wants to rule the world must first win the hearts of the people. Now the king of Qin wants to exchange fifty cities for our jade, and I fear that if he gets the jade, he will betray us. I want to refuse to give it to him, but I also fear that the king of Qin will send troops to attack us. General Lian Po, I entrust you with this decision."

Lian Po said, "I have heard the saying, 'Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will never be defeated in a hundred battles.' I have observed the king of Qin, whose heart is cruel and his desires are insatiable, he must want the jade. Your Majesty should first send an envoy to Qin to investigate the truth. If the king of Qin truly wants the jade, I will personally go to Qin to negotiate with him, to safeguard our national interests. If the king of Qin has no sincerity, I will fight to the death, vowing to defend the dignity of our country."

The king of Zhao replied, "Good." And so he sent Tang Ju as an envoy to Qin.
