In the Taiyuan period of the Jin Dynasty, there was a fisherman from Wuling who made his living by fishing. As he followed the stream, he forgot the distance. Suddenly, he encountered a peach orchard, extending for hundreds of steps on both sides of the river. In the middle, there were no other trees, and the fragrant grass was fresh and beautiful, with fallen petals fluttering in the breeze. The fisherman was greatly surprised. He continued to walk forward, wanting to explore the orchard. At the end of the forest, he reached the source of the stream, and then he saw a mountain with a narrow opening that seemed to emit light. He left his boat and entered through the opening. At first, it was very narrow, just wide enough for a person to pass through. After walking for dozens of steps, it suddenly opened up.

The land was flat and open, with neat houses, good fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry trees, and bamboo. The paths were intersecting, and chickens and dogs could be heard. People were coming and going, planting and harvesting, and the men and women dressed as outsiders. The old and the young were all happy and content.

When they saw the fisherman, they were greatly surprised and asked where he came from. He answered fully. They invited him to their homes, where they set out wine and killed chickens for a meal. The villagers heard about this man and came to inquire. They said that their ancestors had fled the chaos of the Qin Dynasty, led their families and villagers to this secluded place, and had not gone out since, thus cutting off contact with the outside world. They asked what era it was now, and they did not even know about the Han Dynasty, let alone the Wei and Jin Dynasties. The fisherman told them about what he had heard, and everyone sighed in amazement. The others also invited him to their homes, where they all offered wine and food. After staying for several days, he took his leave. The villagers said to him, “It is not something that can be told to outsiders.”

After leaving, he found his boat and began to follow the original path, marking it at every turn. When he arrived in the county, he went to the magistrate and told him about it. The magistrate sent people to follow him and find the place he had marked, but they got lost and could not find the way again. Liu Ziji from Nanyang, a noble and upright man, heard about it and was delighted to plan to go there. However, he did not succeed and eventually died of illness. After that, no one went to look for it anymore.
